Having over the years, for the past 15 years, traveled between South Africa and the DRC, I really fail to understand how our Airports can be so chaotic.
First, our airport infrastructures are so bad beyond beliefs. - Probably 90% of our Airports are of colonial heritage. Take a look at the new Kolwezi Airport terminal. It has been officially inaugurated by the President close to a year ago, but in reality the Airport is still not ready till today. The remaining old Airports like the Lubumbashi one are just pathetic. I sometimes even feel embarrassed. How can people who travel a lot around the world find normal to make use of such Airports? Do they not have some pride in them?
Secondly, our Airports processes are so flawed. - Almost everything is corruption driven. Within 5 meters of each other there are 2 checkpoints for example at Lubumbashi Airport. The people who search bags always look for a reason to ask for money (corruption). I even had a guy questioning a book that he found in my suitcase. The book is called "can't hurt me" by David Goggins. The guy appeared to be bothered that I read a book with a guy dressed in military clothing on the cover. - how pathetic is that? There are absolutely zero common sense practices like putting people in queues. People rush to get inside the main hall, it is complete chaos.
By just visiting any of the DRC airports, one quickly understand how bad things are in the country. Nothing is organized. It says a lot about us as a whole. Even the so called intellectuals are contributors of the mayhem. Instead of boasting of having degrees, masters, etc... can we at least try to be people of integrity and good will?
